Tours of Historical Interest - Tailor Made to Suit You

We are a friendly, Colchester based Tour Company which is well placed for an American visitor to get the maximum enjoyment from their vacation.

We are based in the very old and historic town of Colchester, Essex (60 miles from London).

I have a core tour which I think will be most memorable, but the tour can be altered to whatever you would prefer. This region is the oldest continually populated area of Britain. It is also the driest.

Our tour is for a full day approximately 9am to 7pm. If you are staying in the region I can collect you from your hotel straight after breakfast. You may have come into Harwich on one of the very swish American Cruise Liners! or you may be staying in London (travelling time to Colchester by rail under an hour). I can collect you from the station in the morning and return you to central London in the evening.

The region is renowned for its many beamed and thatched cottages, pretty village greens, ancient inns and castles (not to mention the many antiques shops!) but it has a special interest for Americans as many of the early settlers were from this area. In fact, the 'Mayflower' and its captain were originally from Harwich and the commander of the fleet who founded Jamestown was christened here in 1561.

America has its roots here and the names come down through history. The list not only includes towns and cities, but also people. Gosnold, Winthrop, The Shermans and Cornwallis to name a few. Even the man who put the lantern in the tower for Paul Revere was a migrant from Sudbury in Suffolk. One of the many early migrants was a Reynold Bush who left a village near Colchester, Essex in 1631 for a new life in the colonies.

Modern US history. For me the cornerstone of the tour is our visit to the American War Cemetary at Madingley, near Cambridge. A very moving experience.
